1st post! -Carpenter and Cook-
Thursday, October 31, 2013

Hi everyone! It's Mocha Latte & Latte's first post ever! Let's start with a small introduction of the birth of this blog, shall we?

Mocha Latte & Latte was christened when J and I were at a vintage little cafe at Bangkok early this year. J and I had a dream of opening a cafe one day; we both love coffee, cooking meals with love and creating a space for the perfect chill out / hangout spot. This dream is something we really want to make it happen and so we decided to be partners!

We were chilling one day when J mentioned how she liked the idea of a coffee / cafe journal, where people write down their cafe adventures. It serves as a diary and also a helpful guide for fellow coffee lovers and cafe hopper. Hence we created the blog: Mocha Latte & Latte.

Why Mocha Latte & Latte? Cos that's our favorite drinks! I know, technically there isn't a mocha latte, but still, it rings well with latte. So it's settled. With the limited WiFi at Bangkok, I registered Mocha Latte & Latte and 5 months later, voila! Our first post ever. :)

The other day I went to Carpenter And Cook, a quaint little vintage / retro artisan cafe, tucked deeply into the suburban of Upper Bukit Timah. Unfortunately, J couldn't join us.

(Pardon the un-photogenic photos. My skills as a photography is seriously questionable.)

I like their exterior look, it has a very strong London / Paris influence to it.

It was pretty crowded when we reached there and we were put on a waiting list. But we managed to get a seat in 10 minutes.

Look at the crowd.

When you first step into the cafe, what hits you first is the strong smell of coffee brewing. Then as you looked further into the cafe, your visual is being swamped by the various vintage artifacts and trinkets by the side, on the walls and around the cafe.

I always like the idea of having the counter near the entrance.

I would say their counter has a more rustic feel to it? With all the wood and porcelain.

They have quite a variety of desserts and it brings a very cottage-y feel to see them placed on printed plates. Very home-y.

Now the British always love their tea. That is quite a collection eh!

Indie retro tiles at the entrance.

Hey, they put up theatre plays brochure here!

Coming from a literature / theatre background, it makes me feel very happy and proud that the owners of this cafe tries to bring awareness to stage plays!

All the items displayed can be bought!
I love the wall color, a kind of dusty blue. Reminds me of Alice in the wonderland.

I read from their website that the owners started the cafe because one of them had a love of collecting vintage furniture and display from all over the world. (Especially from London.) So they decided to open a place selling / displaying them and since one of their other partners love to cook, they incorporated food into it and became a cafe!

The toilet discreetly tucked at the back. Lovely sink.

Old school phones! Never know how to use this type of phone. Never had a chance to use it, come to think of it.

What we ordered!
Ginger beer, Tiramisu, Sakura Tea and Passionfruit Meringue.

I didn't take a photo of it but they have a lovely 70s scale box which they use it as a condiment box.

The sakura tea is good! Very strong sakura scent and it's a little thick in consistency compared to the normal tea. The taste of sakura stayed with you with every mouthful.

I would say in overall, the food is alright. The display in the cafe with the many many items all over the place kind of put me off though. I'm a person who loves spaces and this cafe came across as pretty crowded even though later that evening, not much people were in it. They packed the seats quite closely and it's kind of hard to maneuver around.

Still I guess if you are a fan of indie furniture or deco, it's not a bad idea to visit this place! They have different tables and it's quite fun selecting your spot to chill.

Till next time then!! :)
